Here's a list of test prep ideas that use 5 board games with TASK CARDS to make test prep fun!

  1. Battleship- Have the task cards divided into two decks- one even numbers and one odd. Player one will read task card number one and tell their answer to player number two, who has the answer on the top corner of task card number 2. If player one answers correctly, he/she may “take a shot” at player two’s battleship. If player one answers wrong, he/she loses a turn. The players MUST ALWAYS put their card at the back of their deck after they answer whether right or wrong. Are you looking for test prep ideas that are fun and provide motivation? 2. Connect 4- Have the task cards divided the same as described above and play works the same way. If they use all of the task cards before their is a winner, players switch cards with each other.
  3. Guess Who?- Play works the same as described for Battleship.
  4. Checkers- Play works the same as described for Battleship. Just make sure that students know how to play checkers, many students do not. Are you looking for test prep ideas that are fun and provide motivation? 5. Candy Land- Yes! My 3rd graders are happy to play Candy Land with task cards! I have a set of 40 self-checking task cards that I divide among 4 students. I keep them in sandwich bags already divided out and in order. Players read the cards they hold to themselves, and tell their answer to the next player. This player has the answer to the previous card on the top corner of their card. If the first player answers wrong, his/her turn is over. If they answer correctly, they can make a move on the game board using the game cards. One important detail is that when a player is finished, they must put the card at the back of their deck. Play continues until there is a game winner, if they go through the entire deck before there is a winner, players can switch their task card deck with the person who goes before them.

These ideas all use my self-checking task cards that are available for every third grade math standard. Use them for chapter test reviews or end of the year standardized testing. They provide a high degree of student motivation, my students love game day when I incorporate task cards.

The method of play with paper based task cards takes some getting used to. It is much simpler if you have a few iPads available to try the digital version, which comes bundled with the paper based self-checking task cards.

Provide one iPad per game and students take turns answering the digital task cards. Both player 1 and player 2 must be looking at the iPad when one of them answers a task card. The digital task card will direct wrong answers to a “Try Again” card, and the next player will get to try the task card again. This way when a player answers wrong, they will miss a turn. When players get the answer correct, they can take their turn on the game board.
